about

In late 2011, Charlie Chesterman called me and said he dreamed the Weisstronauts had recorded an instrumental version of Bubble Puppy's 1968 regional cult hit "Hot Smoke & Sassafras."
"It's such a great song, but with pretty dumb lyrics... Perfect for an instrumental!" he said. "You guys should do it!"
Well, when someone (particularly Charlie) says they dreamed you covered a song... you better cover it!! We learned it in short order (it is tricky! there is counting involved!) And recorded it. We asked our pal Mitch if he'd do the middle solos... He reported that Let's Active used to cover the song (confusing their fans, which delighted the band), so he knew it well and would be happy to contribute. Meanwhile, Roger Bechirian (legendary engineer, mixer, producer for folks like The Undertones, Squeeze, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and others...) offered to mix the track at his London studio.
Whew!

about

The Weisstronauts Boston, Massachusetts

The Boston-based Weisstronauts are a difficult-to-pigeonhole instrumental rock band employing three electric guitars.

"Then there’s the Weisstronauts, who toss major surf rock influences into a blender with everything else they’ve ever even sort of liked and pull out songs built on combinations that look insane on paper but absolutely kill once you hear them."
- Richard Bouchard
